Exciting Improvements: Enhanced Soil Amendment Task Management in LiteFarm

Hello LiteFarmers!

We are excited to announce updates to the soil amendment task in LiteFarm. While many factors affect soil health, measuring on-farm inputs is fundamental to understanding and improving it. With our latest release, farmers can now track the macro and micro nutrients of their soil amendments, gaining insights into how their activities impact and promote long-term soil health. This is the first step towards our goal of enabling comprehensive monitoring of soil health and greenhouse gas capture and emissions data on your farm. Here’s what’s new and how it could benefit your farm in the future:

What's Improved?

1. Multiple Products and Detailed Purpose Selection

Previously, you could only add one product and one purpose for your soil amendment tasks. Now, you can add multiple products and select multiple purposes for each product, providing greater flexibility and precision in soil treatment planning.

2. Filling Out Task Details

We know details matter, so we’ve added lots of options to get things just right:

You’ll start with:

  • Application Method: Indicate your application method with options like Broadcast, Banded, Furrow/hole, Sidedress (surface), Fertigation, Foliar, or Other. If you pick Furrow/hole, you can specify the depth. If you pick Other, you can tell us more about it.

  • Product Details: Enter everything about the products you’re using, including:

    •   Supplier info

    •   Fertiliser type (Dry or Liquid)

    •   Moisture content

  • Primary nutrients (N, P, K) and additional nutrients (Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Mn, B)

  • Toggle between different units (percentage, ratio, mg/kg, ppm) as needed

Most of these new details are optional, allowing you to document what you need quickly and efficiently while ignoring what you don’t.

3. Managing Quantity and Application Rate

We’ve added flexibility to make sure you can enter exactly what you need:

  • Toggle Between Weight and Volume: Easily switch between weight (kg or pounds) and volume (litres or gallons) based on what you’re using.

  • Quantity Input: Enter the total amount of product you’re spreading.

  • Application Rate for Advanced Users: If you know your application rate per unit area, enter it and let us calculate the total product needed for you.

What else?

As always, we have also resolved a multitude of bugs infesting different parts of the app, improving the overall experience of using LiteFarm.

A critical component of this is the implementation of a fallback screen, meaning that for some issues instead of seeing a white screen, you’ll be prompted to either refresh your screen or log out and log back in. We hope that you’ll never see this screen, but for users who previously encountered a blank screen, we consider this a major improvement.

A Look Ahead

We're excited to share that we have more great features on the horizon! This fall, LiteFarm expects to launch a new Product Inventory section, designed to help you manage your product characteristics and stock levels in detail for all farm tasks. This addition will enable you to track your inventory efficiently, ensuring you always have the necessary supplies on hand.

Moreover, we will be continuing to develop the soil health systems by introducing soil analysis tasks, allowing users to register when, where and how they are taking soil samples. They will also be able to set a reminder to upload the results, allowing farmers to better track the progression and history of their soil health in LiteFarm.

And of course, don’t forget to get egg-cited for our next release! Later this year, we’ll be letting animals out of the barn, allowing farmers to manage their crops and livestock all in LiteFarm. This will be the first of two to three releases focused primarily on livestock and integrated crop-livestock systems.

We encourage you to review our complete plans and vote for your priorities on our public roadmap here. If you're looking for other ways to get involved, please reach out to us at community@litefarm.org.

Thank you for being an essential part of the LiteFarm Community. We're proud to support over 6,000 farmers from 155 countries! We hope this newest release proves valuable (pun intended!) and contributes to the success of your farming endeavours.

As always, happy farming!
